Firefighters Battle Apartment Fire & Heat Wave

Charlotte NC –
Firefighters battled an apartment fire while enduring temperatures approaching 100
degrees Saturday afternoon, July 7th, 2012.
Crews from the Margaret Wallace, Monroe Road, Central Avenue, and W.T. Harris Boulevard Fire Stations responded to a reported structure at 2950 Iron Gate Lane in east
Charlotte at 2:23 p.m. Firefighters from the Central
Avenue Fire Station arrived first to find heavy smoke billowing and flames
rolling from the second floor unit of a two-story townhome.
Taking into account the
high temperatures, the raging flames, and the ensuing firefight the incident
commander summoned additional firefighters to the scene. Crews were resilient
in their efforts to stop the spread of the fire before it could cause any
further damage. A well-coordinated fire attack under strenuous conditions by
(45) Charlotte Firefighters resulted in the knockdown of the flames and
bringing the incident under control in 20 minutes.
Three firefighters were
treated on the scene for heat exposure, however they were cleared to return to
duty. The Carolinas Chapter of the Red Cross was summoned to assist the fifteen
occupants and six canines that were displaced. The cause of fire was deemed to
be electrical in nature.
There was not much time to
rest as Charlotte Firefighters were summoned a short time later to respond as
part of the North Carolina Helo Aquatic Rescue Team (NC HART). The call for
help came from Burke County for an injured hiker in the Linville Gorge
wilderness.
Eternally committed to
duty and service,
