Charlotte NC – Firefighters assigned to Fireboat 38 had a busy day on Lake Wylie, Monday May 30th, 2012 and were able to rescue two individuals injured in a Jet Ski accident, two others when their small watercraft became disabled and put them in harm’s way.
The highly trained crew responded to the first call for help just before 3 p.m. after hearing a report of a Jet Ski accident south of the Buster Boyd Bridge requesting emergency assistance on their marine radio.
Fireboat 38 arrived at the reported location within minutes and were unable to locate anything. The crew continued their search of the area and located two victims in the water near Big Allison Creek. Firefighters immediately entered the water to rescue the injured.
Both patients were removed from the water and placed on the Fireboat. Once on-board they were rendered first aid and transported to awaiting EMS units on shore. Both patients were transferred to York County EMS and transported to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. The circumstances surrounding the accident were being investigated by the York County Sheriffs Department and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Later that afternoon, while patrolling the northern waters of Withers Cove, two people aboard a very small vessel (less than 7ft in length) waived Fireboat 38 down. The individuals were located in the middle of the lake in harm’s way due to the amount of boat traffic producing multiple wakes. The vessel was less than 8 inches above the water line and a strong current rendered the motor of the watercraft ineffective to move them back to shore. Firefighters assisted the two boaters in boarding their vessel and transported to safely to shore.

Charlotte NC – One person was seriously injured and traffic stalled on Interstate 77 near Interstate 485 as the result of a collision involving two passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer on Thursday, May 24th, 2012.
Just before 1 p.m. several companies of Charlotte Firefighters were dispatched to a reported traffic collision involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 77 southbound near the I-485 exit ramp.
Fire crews from nearby Fire Station 20 were first on scene and confirmed a crash involving three vehicles with one person trapped in a small four-door sedan. Because of the serious injuries the victim sustained and the distance of travel to the closest Level I Trauma Center, a medical air evac was requested from Med-Center Air.
Firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement personnel worked in concert to free the victim, provide patient care, divert traffic, and establish a landing zone for Med-Center Air. Rescue Technicians utilized the Jaws of Life and other specialized equipment until the patient was free from the wreckage.
The patient was quickly removed from the sedan, transferred to Med-Center Air and transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. In addition, the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash experienced a medical emergency and was treated and transported for further evaluation. Traffic stalled and inconvenienced motorists for almost an hour. Twenty-four firefighters responded to this incident.

Firefighters Suffer Loss, Affects a Community After Theft

Charlotte, NC – Charlotte Firefighters, public safety officials, and the community suffered a significant loss when a set of cherished bagpipes and a large sum of money were stolen from a firefighter’s vehicle.
The nationally renowned Charlotte Fire Department Pipe and Drums Band plays at funerals and memorial services across the eastern seaboard providing a sense of comfort, support and honor for the families, loved ones, and communities that have suffered the loss of a local public safety official. Regretfully, the firefighter from whom the bagpipes were stolen was unable to perform for a nationally televised Memorial Day event before the NASCAR Coca Cola 500 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
At the sound of bagpipes, many gather to send off a fallen hero. Bagpipes first made their way into the fire service when the Scottish and Irish immigrated to the United States and brought the tradition with them. This tradition has been utilized for a century and a half to commemorate the loss of a warrior within fire and police departments across the world. Although merely instruments to some, these bagpipes serve more of a symbolic role worth much more than their monetary value. The large sum of cash (proceeds from t-shirt sales) stolen was to be used for travel expenses, instruments purchases, and uniforms.
The monetary value of the stolen bagpipes pale in comparison to the honor, respect and comfort this instrument provided at funerals, memorials and parades throughout the country. Although public safety agencies have suffered a loss, this theft strikes at the core of the community. “We are saddened and angered by the theft of such an invaluable instrument which brings so much comfort to the families and friends of our fallen comrades”, said one Los Angeles firefighter after hearing of the theft.
Anyone with information in pertaining to the theft of the bagpipes and money is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704.334.1600. Anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this theft may be eligible for a reward.
Respectfully,
