Charlotte
NC – A fire fueled by natural gas caused extensive damage to a north Charlotte
home and displaced a family of four.
Firefighters
were dispatched to 1204 Stourbridge Lion Drive on Thursday May 17th
at 6:45 p.m. Crews reported seeing a large column of smoke in the vicinity of
the reported location and declared a working fire.
The
crews of Engine & Ladder 27 were first to arrive and alerted additional
responding fire companies of flames showing from the roof of a 2-story house. Teams
of firefighters made haste to simultaneously advance hoselines and search the
burning structure while others worked to shut off the gas supply fueling the
raging fire. Additional teams climbed ladders to cut a hole in the roof allowing
heat, smoke, and superheated gases to escape. This practice referred to as
ventilation assists crews with suppression, search, and rescue efforts. The persistent
efforts of (27) firefighters resulted in the knockdown of flames and bringing
the incident under control in 32 minutes.
The
fire began after the homeowner struck the gas meter with a vehicle while
backing into his yard. The resulting impact compromised the meter allowing
natural gas to flow freely and unabated to the ignition source being the hot
water heating appliance.
The
fire caused extensive damage resulting in the occupants seeking assistance from
the Red Cross for temporary housing. There were no injuries reported.
Eternally committed to
duty and service,
