Commercial Structure Fire Deemed Arson
Charlotte NC – For a second time in as many as 4 days, the cause of a structure fire was deemed arson. On February 23rd at 9:54 PM, firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 6607 South Boulevard in south Charlotte.
Battalion Chief Tim Rogers was first to arrive and reported heavy smoke issuing from a large one-story commercial structure. Firefighters began an aggressive fire attack in an attempt to halt the forward progress of a well-entrenched fire. Crews utilized ladders to gain access to the roof where they cut a large hole allowing smoke, heat, and super-heated gases to escape. This practice aids firefighters in the suppression of fires and searching structures. A portion of South Boulevard was temporarily closed to accommodate water supply and crews stretching hoselines.
A well-coordinated fire attack by (44) firefighters resulted in the knockdown of the fire and the incident being brought under control in thirty-five minutes. The business identified as Goodwill Industries was closed at the time of the incident and there were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire has been determined to be arson and damage is estimated at $500,000 (a total loss). Fire Investigators are seeking the assistance of the public and are asking anyone with information pertaining to this fire to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
