Charlotte-Mecklenburg EM Embraces Emerging Communications Channels

Edit Post
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office (CMEMO) has officially launched an additional communication platform to provide the population of Charlotte-Mecklenburg with emergency messaging. Via Twitter, you can now follow Emergency Management @CharMeckEM. With over 100 people currently following @CharMeckEM this provides CMEMO with the ability to notify a segment of the population with up-to-date information on a variety of emergency preparedness issues and topics.
"It is incumbent for Emergency Management to stay abreast on how our culture is embracing new technology. Using emerging channels of communication like Twitter provides us another venue to share timely information regarding Severe Weather Warnings, Emergency Preparedness, and Significant Incidents that may impact the population of Charlotte-Mecklenburg", said Michael Tobin, Emergency Management Planner, CMEMO.
By having an additional line of communication, CMEMO is able to provide a short, quick and effective message tool to get the message out to the population. Although the number of people using Twitter is still growing every day, it is an important segment of the population that wants to stay informed with up-to-date information. CMEMO will still continue to communicate through our traditional means of press releases, reverse 911 and other means but this is an additional tool for the toolbox. The strategy and planning that goes into notifying the public is a vital role that Emergency Management takes very seriously.
With @CharMeckEM now on line at Twitter and garnering a following, the future of mass-communication will take CMEMO to Facebook and YouTube as well as a revised and updated website. A very important responsibility of emergency management is to inform the public of potential hazardous situations so they can take the appropriate actions. The emergence of social media channels provides an additional platform for communication.
