Firefighters Stop Early Morning Tavern Fire

On January 3, 2011 at 5:24 a.m. (9) Companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (1) Hazardous Materials Company (Haz-Mat), (1) Deputy Chief, (3) Battalion Chiefs, (1) Deputy Fire Marshal, (1) Chief Fire Investigator, and (3) Fire Investigators under the direction of Battalion Chief B.J. Kurzel responded to a reported structure at 1518 Montford Drive.
A Mecklenburg County EMS Unit that observed flames coming from the structure reported the fire. The first units from nearby Station 12 were on scene in less than five minutes and reported heavy smoke and fire consuming the rear of the restaurant establishment. Firefighters sprinted into action and engaged in a fierce firefight fueled by propane tanks. The large tavern, which is over 2600 square feet, has multiple additions that made it difficult for firefighters to locate the fire from the interior.
While teams of firefighters battled the fire, others searched the building to ensure no one was inside. The search produced negative results. A Haz-Mat Team was summoned to assess and control the venting propane tanks after they were extinguished. Firefighters were able to stop the fire from consuming the remainder of the restaurant and confine the majority of the damage to the rear of the structure.
(49) Firefighters were needed to knockdown the fire and bring the incident under control in 35 minutes. The restaurant was closed for business at the time of the fire and there were no injuries to report. Fire Investigators said the investigation into the origin and cause could take some time to determine. Damage estimates stand at $150,000.
