Driver Survives After Vehicle Plunges Over Wall

On January 1, 2011 at 5:08 p.m., (3) Companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (1) Urban Search and Rescue Company (USAR) under the direction of Battalion Chief P.T. Bosche Jr. responded to a reported single vehicle accident at 8115 Vinoy Boulevard.

Firefighters from nearby Station 27 were first to arrive and found a single vehicle, which had driven through a fence, over a retention wall, and came to rest nose first some 15 feet down in a muddy pond at Windsor at the Vinoy Apartments. After an initial assessment the incident commander immediately requested additional resources for assistance.

Further investigation revealed the driver who had self-extricated from the vehicle and bystanders who had come to his aid were approximately 100‟ feet to the far side of the pond. Firefighters quickly provided patient care while others set up for extrication via a ladder slide, with an aerial pickoff as a backup plan. A Heavy Rescue Company (a specialized team of highly trained rescue technicians) arrived and completed rigging to their truck as an anchor point just as the patient was brought to the base of the ground ladder.

The lone patient was transported to an area trauma center with potentially life-threatening injuries. (22) Firefighters were needed to extricate the patient and bring the incident under control in 28 minutes.
