On December 22, 2010 at 5:15 PM (6) Companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (2) Battalion Chiefs, and (2) Fire Investigators responded to reports of a structure fire at 11419 Winding Way Road.
Firefighters arrived a short time later at 7419 Bent Oak Road near the intersection of Winding Way and Bent Oak to find heavy smoke and flames emitting from a 1-story single family home. Crews sprinted into action and engaged in a firefight with a well-entrenched fire in the 1300 square foot structure. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines, searched the home, and were able to knockdown the fire in 18 minutes.
(27) Firefighters were summoned to the scene. The fire began on the rear porch of the home and was caused by discarded smoking materials. Damage estimates stand at $75,000. Unfortunately, as a result of the fire, a family was displaced and one firefighter sustained a minor injury. Discarded smoking materials are the leading cause of deaths in residential fires.
Your Charlotte Fire Department would like to remind the community to:
- Stay Safe - Avoid smoking in bed.
- Stay Alert - Extinguish and properly discard smoking material before getting sleepy.
- Stay Alive - Have a working smoke alarm in your home.
Eternally devoted to duty and service,
Mark Basnight | Captain
Public Information Officer
Charlotte Fire Department
