On October 10th, 2010 at 9:14 a.m. (1) company of firefighters, (1) Hazardous Materials Response Team, (1) Battalion Chief, and (1) Hazardous Materials Battalion Chief from the Charlotte Fire Department responded to a report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) of the detonation of a small explosive device at the Turning Point Academy located at 2300 W. Sugar Creek Road. Turning Point Academy has a population of over 450 students grades K-12. Shortly thereafter, an update was given notifying companies enroute of a person injured.
Firefighters from nearby Station 22 were first to arrive, observed students evacuating the school, found a student suffering from burn injuries, and the remnants of an explosive device. Firefighters sprinted into action, quickly treating and assisting paramedics preparing the patient for transport to Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville. Simultaneously, officers from CMPD worked to secure the building while Hazardous Materials Technicians under the direction of the Hazardous Materials Battalion Chief supported tactical operations performed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Bomb Squad. After a thorough search of the premises, Bomb Technicians deemed the school safe for students to return. Fire and police investigators processed the scene, conducted an interview of a suspect, and determined an additional threat for explosives at the home of the suspect.
Subsequently (4) companies of firefighters, (2) Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Response Teams, (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (1) Decontamination Unit, (2) Battalion Chiefs, (3) Deputy Chiefs, and (4) Fire Investigators responded to 10622 Mt. Holly Road in support of local, state, and federal law enforcement officals including the CMPD Bomb Squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Haz-Mat and Bomb Technicians reconned the home of the suspect and located product suspected to be of explosive nature. As members of the Haz-Mat Team were testing product discovered in the residence, an explosion occurred causing a glass vial to shatter. As a result of this explosion caused by this extremely volatile product, three Haz-Mat Technicians were injured. Fellow firefighters raced to the aid of their fallen comrades and administered aid. Subsequently they were transported to an area trauma center for evaluation and treatment. The Haz-Mat Technicians were treated and later released. Operations ceased at 10:45 p.m. Monday evening and the scene was secured by law enforcement officials.
Operations to clear and render the structure safe resumed at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Haz-Mat Teams and Bomb Technicians worked throughout the day to render the home safe while firefighters manned hoselines to provide protection in the event of a third explosion. The home was rendered safe at 5:35 p.m. and Charlotte Fire Department resources cleared the scene.
Eternally devoted to duty and service,
