2 Injured After Explosion
On August 16th, 2010 at 8:58 a.m. (2) companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) Hazardous Materials Response Teams, (1) Battalion Chief, (1) Hazardous Materials Battalion Chief, and (1) Emergency Management Coordinator were called to assist Mecklenburg County Firefighters with a reported explosion involving chlorine at 9859 Spring Ridge. Upon the arrival of Charlotte Firefighters, Mecklenburg County Firefighters and MEDIC personnel were treating 2 workers who had been injured as the result of an explosion involving pool chemicals.
Both workers were reported to have been mixing chlorine and another chemical in a storage building to treat the community pool used at the mobile home park. The Haz-Mat Team made entry into the building and determined the explosion was caused when the workers improperly mixed chemicals, which caused a chemical reaction and the subsequent explosion.
One worker suffered chemical burns to the face and was transported with life-threatening injuries to an area trauma center. The other worker complained of difficulty breathing and was transported potentially life threatening injuries.
