Firefighters Rescue Infant From Heat Exposure

Just before 4 p.m. on Saturday July 24th, 2010 as the heat index exceeded 100 degrees, bystanders in the parking lot of a Walmart Super Center alerted firefighters of an infant found locked alone inside of an automobile. Firefighters sprinted into action, opened a door of the car with a lockout tool, and removed the infant from the automobile which had essentially become an oven-like environment. The baby was found sweating profusely, under a blanket, and lethargic.

The infant was taken to the air-conditioned cab of the fire truck, given oxygen, and her vital signs were monitored. MEDIC and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were requested to respond while Walmart Security made an in-store announcement of an infant being found locked in a car in the parking lot. The mother returned to the car and taken into custody. She was charged with child neglect. The infant was transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

Charlotte Fire Officials would like to admonish the population to Stay Cool, Stay Safe, Stay Alive!

  • Stay Cool: Drink plenty of water, hydration should begin the day before engaging in outdoor activities; wear light colored and loose fitting clothing, wear light-weight hats to shield your head from the sun if you plan to be (work) in direct sunlight.
  • Stay Safe: Limit the amount of time you spend outdoors and the amount of time you are exposed to direct sunlight, Limit alcohol you consumption; alcohol encourages the body to lose more water than it takes on.
  • Stay Alive: Don't leave children, the elderly, or pets unattended in vehicles, be aware of the signs & symptoms of heat exposure emergencies (heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke).

Respectfully yours in public service,
