On Thursday June 10, 2010 at 5:13 AM, five companies of Charlotte Firefighters, (1) heavy rescue company, (2) Battalion Chiefs, (1) Deputy Chief, and (3) Fire Investigators responded to a reported duplex fire at 1725 Runnymede Lane near the Myers Park community.
Firefighters from nearby Station 12 were first to arrive at 5:18 AM and reported heavy smoke showing from a 1-story duplex. Firefighters quickly sprung into action by deploying a hoseline and making entry into the fire apartment where they initiated a search for occupants. Additional fire crews established a water supply utilizing a nearby fire hydrant, deployed additional hoselines, and opened the roof of the structure to allow superheated gases, smoke, and heat to escape.
While conducting their search of the fire apartment, firefighters found an unconscious male occupant near the front door, quickly extricated him from the structure, and moved him to the front yard where resuscitation efforts began. He was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The deceased has been identified as Alexander Copeland III.
The fire caused extensive damage to the fire apartment and moderate damage to the adjacent apartment estimated at $160,000 - $175,000. Fire Investigators say the fire began in a rear living area and ruled the cause as accidental.
