1 Rescued 2 Others Injured in Apartment Fire

On May 3rd, 2010, (16) units from the Charlotte Fire Department including (7) Engine Companies, (2) Ladder Companies, (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (1) Deputy Chief, (3) Battalion Chiefs, and (2) Fire Investigators responded to a structure fire at 3521 Nobles Avenue in west Charlotte. Fire companies responded after fire communications received a '911 hangup call' from the 3500 block of Nobles Avenue. Firefighters from nearby Station 17 were first to arrive at 9:35 am and reported heavy smoke showing from a 2-story apartment building and immediately requested a second alarm bringing additional resources to the scene. Upon their arrival Engine 17 also observed a male subject hanging from a second floor window sill and an adult female showing herself from the same window in distress because of the heavy smoke conditions. As the crew began rescue operations with ground ladders the male subject leaped to safety. The male subject suffered no apparent injuries from the fall.

Firefighters from Ladder 2 arrived on scene and assisted with rescue operations by cutting a hole in the roof of the structure to allow smoke and super-heated gases to escape. As additional crews of firefighters arrived on scene, a water source was established using a nearby fire hydrant while hose lines were deployed and advanced to attack the fire. Firefighters from Engine 17 successfully extricated an adult female from a second bedroom using ground ladders. A male infant who was inside the structure when the fire began was outside the structure and being cared for by a family member when firefighters arrived. Three of the five occupants present at the time of the fire were transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation and burns.

(46) Firefighters were called to knock the fire down and bring it under control in 13 minutes, but not before the fire caused extensive damage estimated at $75,000. Fire Investigators determined the fire began in a first floor bathroom, but the cause remains under investigation. The Greater Carolina's Chapter of the Red Cross responded to the scene and worked with the housing authority to provide assistance to residents of the two apartments affected by the fire.
