Firefighters Rescue 2 From Apartment Fire

On August 17, 2010 at 3:14 p.m. (5) companies of Charlotte Firefighters (1) Heavy Rescue Company, (2) Deputy Chiefs, (2) Battalion Chiefs, and (2) Fire Investigators responded to a 911 hang up at 5701 Leake Street in west Charlotte. Battalion 8 was first on the scene and reported smoke showing from a large 2-story apartment building. Battalion 8 established command and after being told by a person that children were in the apartment, made entry without his firefighter gear and unassisted into the apartment.

Conditions in the unit involved were heavy smoke stratifying from the ceiling to close to ground level with little to no visibility. After entering the apartment, the lone Battalion Chief heard the cry of a baby and navigated his way in extremely hazardous conditions until he found the baby. While making his way out of the structure Battalion 8 heard the cry of a second child, but because of the deteriorating fire conditions, he was forced to exit the structure with the one child in hand. While making his way out the structure the lone Battalion Chief was met by a firefighter who took the child and rendered medical care.

Once out of the structure, the Battalion Chief met with first due firefighters and informed them that another child was in the apartment. With no hose line in place, firefighters valiantly and courageously made haste to enter the fire apartment in search of the second child. Following predetermined search patterns, firefighters were able to find the second child and carry it to safety where they began medical treatment. No other occupants of the apartment unit were present at the time of the rescues. Twenty-nine firefighters were needed to affect the rescues, knockdown the flames, and bring the fire under control in 13 minutes. Fire Investigators say, the fire was caused by food left cooking unattended and caused an estimated $10,000 in damage. At least one family was displaced.
