October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and more than likely someone close to you has been diagnosed with breast cancer. That is why we would like to invite you, your family, and friends to join us in supporting the fight against this disease. “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” and the “Komen Race for the Cure” are two upcoming events in which you can participate in. The American Cancer Society will Make Strides at their walk at Symphony Park beside SouthPark Mall this Saturday, September 26. The Race for the Cure is uptown on Saturday, October 3 and includes both a competitive and noncompetitive 5K, a 1 mile Fun Run or Walk, and a kids 50 yard dash. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. It is estimated that 192,370 women and 1910 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. 40,610 cancer patients will die. Death rates are going down, probably the result of early detection and improved treatment. Monies raised by these events are used to help people stay well and get well from breast cancer, research and finding a cure and empowering people to fight back. Captain DiAnn Collier, E-40A will be leading a team at the “Making Strides” event and I will be leading a team in the “Race for the Cure”. You can join the fight either by registering to participate or simply by making a donation. Sign up today at www.stridescharlotte.org or www.komencharlotte.org . Look for team Charlotte Fire Department. If you are already registered as an individual you can still join the team through the website.
