Fire Recruits Hit The Street

On January 26, 2009 the members of Recruit Class 80 reported for their first day of duty. Little did they know the 25 week journey ahead of them would have them crawling through pipes, scaling ladders, stretching hose, fighting fires, and performing all types of high angle rescue simulations.
The Recruit Training Program is challenging both physically and mentally. The physical fitness training and practical evolutions are designed to develop physical ability, mental preparedness, and a strong sense of teamwork. As Recruits complete courses to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 1001, NFPA 1002 for Emergency Vehicle Drivers, and Emergency Medical Technician; they also receive extensive training in firefighter safety and survival, and many special hazard areas to which they may be called to respond including the Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Charlotte Transit’s Light Rail System.
Of the 16 Graduates in Recruit Class 80, 11 are North Carolina natives. Other members moved to Charlotte from as far away as Pennsylvania and Ohio. Their initial training and indoctrination period ended with a graduation ceremony on July 16, 2009 at the Fire Training Academy, with Fire Chief Jon Hannan present as the guest speaker.
